Fernando makes his bags, purses, wallets, cases, backpacks and so on ENTIRELY by hand – and obviously with the use of a whole range of tools, many now almost antiques. The other day I came across an article about leatherworking and made a note of some of the names of these tools – previously I´d only thought of them by their Spanish names. Saddler´s clams, overstitch wheel (used for marking the holes for stitching; sometimes he just uses a fork!) various stitching awls, skirt shave/edge shaves/bevellers, harness needles, cork block, waxed thread, rivet setters, wooden mallet, leather punch, leather knife, round knife, cutting board, metal straight-edge, cobbler´s last…
The saddler´s clams and the mallet are lovely-looking tools.
